What is NLP? - Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a set of techniques and beliefs developed in the 1970’s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in association with Gregory Bateson. NLP works with a person’s neurology, language and programming, three of the most basic components of the human experience. These techniques explore in very precise terms the images, sounds, and feelings that make up our inner and outer world.

What is NLP?

NLP is the acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

 • Neuro - the brain’s neurology.

 • Linguistic - language patterns or communication.

 • Programming - the way the brain codes information

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a set of techniques and beliefs developed in the 1970’s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in association with Gregory Bateson.

NLP works with a person’s neurology, language and programming, three of the most basic components of the human experience. These techniques explore in very precise terms the images, sounds, and feelings that make up our inner and outer world.

NLP addresses not only specific thought processes, attitudes and behaviors, but also the mental processes behind them. NLP will give you tools and skills to empower you to be the person you are meant to be.

NLP is a quick and POWERFUL way to shift and change your thinking.

NLP Facilitates Change

The NLP equation for change is:

Present State + Resources = DESIRED STATE

Your PRESENT STATE is how you are now .

Examples include feelings and attitudes of sadness, fear, anxious, angry etc.

Your RESOURCES are anything that can bring you closer to your desired state .

Examples include changing your beliefs, taking appropriate actions or developing skills material possessions, skills, etc

The DESIRED STATE is what you want instead .

Examples include desires such as wanting to be calm, forgiving, confident, sure of yourself, etc.

NLP is about modeling EXCELLENCE

NLP processes are a result of discovering the internal thinking patterns of experts. NLP practitioners then teach these skills of thinking to their clients.

NLP is learning how your brain OPERATES

NLP describes in very precise terms the image, sounds, and feelings that make up our inner and outer world. How do you know that a pleasant memory is pleasant? How do you know if you are happy or scared? How do you code your experiences visually, auditory and physically?

By shifting how you see, hear and feel, you can discover the answers to your questions.

NLP is about COMMUNICATION

One of the principles of NLP is realizing that we are always communicating. The majority of our communication is non-verbal. NLP is recognizing cues and adjusting your communication.

NLP gives practical tools for skilled communication.

NLP is about knowing the POWER of your thoughts

Imagine being on your favorite beach, stress-free and without demands. Hear, see and feel what you would like. In contrast, imagine yourself and your child being held at gunpoint! Between the two situations, which was clearer or more vivid? Which was more open to your peripheral vision? What sounds did you hear with each example? Were the sounds soft and flowing, or were they piercing, sharp or muffled? Did you feel your heart rate and blood pressure change by a mere thought?

When shifting how we think, we change our experience. Our thoughts are powerful!

NLP is recognizing and organizing EMOTIONS

When you are angry, where in your body do you feel a sensation? Do you feel it in your chest or head? How do you feel or sense fear? Is it in your stomach or is it a feeling of being held down?

After feelings are sorted, a process is used to understand the positive intention of your feelings then shifts them to become a positive resource.

NLPis recognizing the underlying positive intentions of BEHAVIOR

Is the positive intention of your anger to get someone to take action and/or keep yourself safe? Is the positive intention of being mean to someone else to make yourself feel more important? Is the positive intention of rebellion to help you gain more freedom, thus being able to be fully who you are?

With NLP, you learn to honor your intentions and add resources to accomplish the same intention with a different behavior.

Hypnosis is a heightened state of RECEPTIVITY

All people experience different levers of “trance” many times each day, such as while driving to work or using the computer. A trance is a natural state. Hypnosis, or the state of being in a trance, is a state of relaxation. With the conscious mind clear, the unconscious is open and receptive to change at a deep level. Trance is also a state of heightened receptivity, with intense internal focus and concentration. The unconscious is everything you know and are experiencing that you are not presently conscious of. As you read this pamphlet… pause, notice what sounds you may be hearing now that you were not aware of while reading. The unconscious is aware at all times.

Hypnotherapists are specialists in recognizing and understanding unconscious motives behind behavior. For example, one may be overweight to unconsciously be protected. It is great to know that we can understand unconscious sabotage.

NLP and hypnosis are intended to be about SELF-DISCOVERY & operating on the following presuppositions:

 • Behind every behavior there is a positive intention.

 • We all have the resources we need.

 • The map (how you experience things) is not necessarily the territory (reality).

 • Anything is achievable when broken down into small enough pieces.

 • All symptoms, emotional & physical, is communication about needed action.

 • Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they know.

 • If what you’re doing is not working, do something else.

 • We are always communicating.

 • Choice is better than no choice.

 • There is no failure, only feedback.

With NLP and HYPNOSIS , you can have the mind control you want and deserve!
